As Ettamae’s begins its second year, we have a lot of people to thank for our success!
First things first, thank you to the early adapters, the culinary curious who braved their way past construction fences in those early days and sought us out and then told all their friends. We will never forget you, especially since we still see you on a weekly basis.
We would also like to thank the media engines of Richmond and the people who write for them. Thank you Deveron Timberlake from Style Magazine, who gave us our first write up, Thank you Dana Craig from Richmond Times Dispatch who gave us 3 stars and some of the busiest days that followed. Thank you to Matt Sadler from Richmond Magazine who kindly recommended us for one of Richmond’s “Best New Restaurants” in the January 2011 issue.
Last, but certainly not least, thank you to food bloggers Karen Newton, who waxed so poetically about us on her blog “I could go on and on” (we just call her Legs) and Jason Guard from RVA Foodie who wrote and tweeted and is generally a supportive dude.
Thank you Facebook and Tweeters for not getting annoyed when we overcommunicate (Ha!) Thank you to our new regulars, thank you to the lady that just left saying she would tell all her friends. Thank you Richmond!
About Ettamae’s Café
Ettamae’s is a family-owned and operated restaurant serving, lunch, brunch, and dinner in Historic Jackson Ward. As the phoenix of 2nd street rises from the ashes or rather construction dust, Ettamae’s is excited and proud to be part of the Jackson Ward revival. Ettamae’s is located in a quaint turn of the century two-story between Clay and Leigh St, Ettamae’s Café boasts a cheerful to go counter and kitchen downstairs and a dreamy dining room and balcony upstairs.
Owners Matthew Morand and Laura Morand Bailey are Richmond natives but their six-year stint in Brooklyn, New York has influenced their restaurant philosophy too. “Our first goal was to become that favorite place for nearby office workers and residents, a retreat of sorts,” says Laura. But after considerable press including a glowing review from Dana Craig in the Richmond Times Dispatch, Ettamae’s became a destination spot for people from all over the Greater Richmond Area. “This allowed us to expand our daily specials to include more entrees, above the usual lunch fare.” says Chef Matthew, “and our baked goods have really taken off too.”
Lunch includes sandwiches, salads, and sides ranging from the familiar (BBQ, Meatloaf, Chicken Salad) to the sublime (Shaved Ribeye, Cumin Pork Manchengo). Ettamae’s delivers lunch to area office buildings and residents as well as providing full sit down service to those who need to break free from their cubicle for an hour. Recent lunch specials have included entrees like porkloin over yams in an apple cider reduction and St. Louis BBQ ribs served with spoonbread and coleslaw. Baked goods are made on the premises and the coffee poured is locally roasted Blanchard’s Coffee.
Perhaps ironic in its homey setting, Ettamae’s has become a favorite power lunch meeting spot for businessmen, city council members, and community organizers. .
At night, Ettamae’s becomes that cozy bistro everyone longs to find. Our entrees are classic dishes prepared with great care. Our dinner menu changes monthly but typically include beef, pork, pasta and seafood. Our intimate dining room and second floor balcony make it an ideal date place and a great place to relax with friends and family. Because we take reservations for two or more, we are a great pre-event dining menu, close to the Richmond Coliseum, The National, The Empire Theater, Center Stage, The Landmark Theater, and of course, The Hippodrome.
Chef/Owner Matthew Morand has worked for local spots Du Jour, Hermitage Grill, and the 2300 Club as well as NYC’s Rockefeller Center Café, and Ulysses. Manager/Owner Laura Morand Bailey has worked in catering for Frazier and Moore and The Butlers Pantry and was the manager of the Byrd House Market for two years in a row.

The shining star of Second Street. Ettamae’s is even more adorable at night - if we do say so ourself.
Chef/Owner Matthew Morand starts the day making his own sub rolls and Amish white loaves.
